At Farinart, we firmly believe in playing an active role when it comes to protecting the environment. For us, this starts with implementing sustainable practices, a cornerstone of which is regenerative agriculture.

Principles of Regenerative Agriculture

“Regenerative agriculture focuses on restoring and maintaining biologically healthy soil. It takes its cues from nature, which has a long record of successfully growing things. By recarbonizing soils via photosynthesis and biology, regenerative agriculture produces healthy food, protects watersheds, strengthens ecological and cultural diversity, and expands economic resilience. It is a low-cost “shovel-ready”, solution to climate change. It can restore degraded land. It can feed the world. Regenerative agriculture has ancient origins and is the foundation of Indigenous and traditional food systems worldwide.”

  • Understanding context

No two farms are the same, and the regenerative agriculture principles should be implemented based on the environmental, economic, and cultural context of each unique operation.

  • Minimizing soil disturbance

Soil is very porous, like a sponge, and tilling weakens its structure. It collapses on itself, hardens, and, over time, loses its ability to absorb water or allow roots to grow. Reducing or eliminating tillage, along with limiting other disturbances like overgrazing and over-application of nutrients and pesticides, can reverse this process.

  • Maximizing crop diversity

Many problems that farmers face—including pests, diseases, and poor nutrient cycling—are due to lack of diversity in the agricultural system. Including a broader range of plants and animals in the system decreases pest and disease pressure, while also supporting biodiversity and improving the health of the soil.

  • Keeping soil covered

Keeping soil covered with living plants and crop residue protects it from wind, sun, heavy rains and other elements that erode the soil and damage organisms living in it.

  • Maintaining living roots year-round

Green, living plants are the basis of the soil’s ecosystem. While most crops only grow for a few months out of the year, growing plants continually throughout the year retains nutrients and increases the supply of food to the living things in the soil, which leads to carbon sequestration, cleaner water and improved soil function.

  • Integrating livestock

Integrating grazing livestock on crop land benefits plants and soil in numerous ways. Natural pruning inspires new plant growth, natural fertilizer invites helpful insects to aerate the soil and spread organic matter, and livestock movement increases nutrient cycling by trampling crop residue, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving air quality.

Terralis
Consortium

Sun flawer

The Consortium for Agro Ecology (CAE) was founded in 2011 by Pierre-Olivier Gaucher. In 2024, the consortium has grown to include 52 farmers united under the name Terralis, a banner that works exclusively with Farinart. In total, over 20,000 HA of land are registered to our program. This consortium is the first in Canada, and the only one to professionally regroup such a high number of farmers who practice 100% regenerative agriculture on their land.

Farinart is proud to partner with Foodbridge-Terre à table to promote the transition to regenerative agricultural practices.
For us, this means actively participating in collaborative and mobilizing projects such as the Foodbridge-Terre à table project Veiller au grain. This project aims to promote the gradual adoption of regenerative practices on field crop farms in the Montérégie, Mauricie and Abitibi-Témiscamingue regions through strategic collaborations.
